Max Holloway is set to fight Justin Gaethje at UFC 300 for the BMF title. However, today we will focus on Max’s achievements in the UFC and address the question, “Was Max Holloway ever been a champion?”
Max Holloway, whose full name is Jerome Max Kelii Holloway, was born on December 4, 1991, in Honalulu, Hawaii, and raised in Waianae.
When Holloway made his promotional debut on February 4, 2012, at UFC 143, he was the youngest fighter on the UFC roster. He stepped in as an injury replacement for Ricardo Lamas and faced Dustin Poirier. Unfortunately, Holloway lost the fight in the first round via submission (mounted triangle armbar).
After a defeat to Conor McGregor in August 2013, Holloway’s career took an upward trajectory. He went on an impressive winning streak, securing victories in 13 consecutive matches in the UFC. Along the way, he defeated notable opponents such as Charles Oliveira, Jeremy Stephens, Anthony Pettis, Jose Aldo, and Brian Ortega.
Holloway’s victory over Pettis earned him the interim featherweight championship of the UFC. He further solidified his position by defeating Jose Aldo at UFC 212, becoming the undisputed featherweight champion. Holloway successfully defended his featherweight belt three times.
Despite his impressive accomplishments and undeniable skill, Holloway faced a truly formidable opponent in Alexander Volkanovski. This tough and highly skilled fighter proved to be a true test for Holloway, as they went head-to-head in the Octagon not once, not twice, but three times. Despite Holloway’s best efforts, victory eluded him in each and every one of those epic battles.
At one point, Holloway was originally scheduled to fight Khabib Nurmagomedov, another great of the sport, for the highly anticipated lightweight belt. However, due to unforeseen circumstances, including Max not being medically cleared to participate in the main event, the fight unfortunately had to be cancelled. This turn of events left fans disappointed as they were eagerly looking forward to witnessing the clash between these two formidable fighters.
One of the most impressive aspects of Holloway’s career is that he has never been knocked out. He has faced some of the best strikers in the game, including Conor McGregor, Dustin Poirier, and Alexander Volkanovski, without being knocked out. Out of his seven losses, he was defeated by McGregor once, Volkanovski three times, and Poirier twice.
Many people regard Holloway as having the best boxing abilities among the entire UFC roster. His remarkable record of 25 wins and 7 losses, combined with his ability to withstand powerful strikes, exemplifies his exceptional skill.
Holloway holds the record for the most fight time in UFC featherweight competition, a testament to his endurance and dedication to the sport.
He is also among the rare fighters in UFC history to achieve 20 victories with the promotion. Additionally, Holloway has landed 100 or more significant strikes in 15 separate UFC fights, the most in company history. No other fighter has achieved more than eight such performances.
Max Holloway’s long list of records highlights his brilliance and establishes him as one of the greatest fighters in UFC history.
